Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us. Hebrews 12:1

This year, the Pregnancy Resource Center of Metro Richmond has chosen “Together for Life” as its theme, and our first event is a chance for our supporters in mass to bring that theme to life! Saturday, April 28, 2012 will be the annual Walk for Life with all proceeds being used to offer vital services to women who are unprepared for pregnancy.

The non-competitive walk will start at 10:00 am and will conclude with a light fellowship lunch, graciously provided for us by the Knights of Columbus. We are planning to have a wonderful time of celebration rain or shine, but as always, we pray that the “SON” will be shining on that day as we come together in thanks for His provision.

Last year was the first time we brought our fundraising to the Web with the introduction of Walker pages and collecting pledges online. We are going to continue that this year, and you can visit http://www.friendsofprcrichmond.org/walk/ for more information and to register. In addition to setting up a personal page for donations, you can link our page to your Facebook page and help us spread the word to your friends, wherever they might be. Of course, if you prefer to collect your pledges on paper, the centerfold of this newsletter is a Walk Sponsor form. You can use it to begin engaging sponsors for the walk.

We are happy to highlight the incentives we have for walkers this year. For pledges in the amount of $250 or more, the official “Together for Life “ t-shirt. At the $750 level, new for this year, is a 16-can capacity cooler bag. And finally, walkers who raise $1,250 or more in pledges will receive a gift certificate for Dinner for Two.

It’s going to be a great walk, and we pray that you will turn out to celebrate life on Monument Avenue for the 2012 Walk for Life and help us raise funds to continue our mission!

Dear Friends,

As we celebrate the gift of life in Christ, I am reminded of the many challenges that Joseph and Mary faced in bringing our Savior Jesus into the world. God raised a heavenly host, the Shepherds and Wise men to stand with them.

I am so grateful to the many who have served with the Pregnancy Resource Center (PRC) of Metro Richmond this year: giving of your time, gifts, and talents. Together, we have witnessed the body of Christ coming together cross-denominationally and cross-culturally to stand compassionately for life. From January through October 2011, the number of clients we serve continued to grow:

We had 2,192 client visits and administered 831 pregnancy tests.

Of the 648 clients with positive pregnancy tests, 570 decided to carry to birth.

We had 899 visits to our parenting classes, mom support groups, or Bible studies.

78 males visited our center as clients (we saw 55 males total in 2010).

Please take a moment to view our 2011 Update (PDF). We have much to rejoice in as we review the success of the work God has done in and through us thus far this year!

As I rejoice, I am also writing to you with a broken heart. Every day I hear a new client story that makes me even more thankful for the mission of the PRC. I witness women who face certain poverty if they choose to bring a life into this world, men who are fighting to save their children’s lives inside of the womb, and frightened parents expressing concerns over how to talk to their teens about sex.

Did you know that it costs us $86 million a year to not talk about sex?

In 2008, Richmond taxpayers spent $86 million in teen childbearing costs that include:

$80 million for public health care, child welfare, costs associated with increased rates of incarceration of children born to fragmented families, and lost tax revenue due to decreased earnings and spending.

$6 million for the hospitalization and care of low birth-weight babies born to teens.

The data on teen childbearing and poverty is far more alarming than the financial impact on our city: only 50% of teen mothers receive a high school diploma by age 22, versus nearly 90% of women who have not given birth during adolescence. 58% of single-parent households in Richmond live below the poverty line. The clients who walk through our doors are facing a tough challenge as the cycle of poverty is seemingly unavoidable. The politics of abortion are not pressing issues for these clients. Instead, it is the overwhelming circumstances in which they find themselves: poverty, unhealthy relationships, and the lack of medical resources. Together, we can provide a resource that assists in breaking the cycle—for with God nothing is impossible.

Clients come to the Pregnancy Resource Center for free medical services, but are also aching for a listening ear, free of judgment. When they come to the PRC, they are met with the love of Christ alongside receipt of desperately needed medical services. For the past 28 years, the PRC has served more than 30,000 women and teens facing the challenges of an unplanned pregnancy. Our options counseling and medical services have connected thousands of women with the kind of early prenatal care that leads to healthy babies. This year, we have increased our outreach to high school students, encouraging positive youth development, which contributes to the reduction of pregnancy out of wedlock.

We are not alone; your hand is in this. We could not provide our services without you, our charitable investors. Your investment in our mission affirms the value of each life while providing vital services to thousands of at-risk teens and childbearing adults. Your gifts help us to break the cycle of poverty by providing:

Professional nurses who volunteer their time to provide lifestyle-choice counseling with information on how to avoid unplanned pregnancy through abstinence education.

Pregnancy and parenting classes, which include lessons on: infant and child safety; Bible study and spiritual counseling; healthy parenting and domestic violence prevention.

Access to 3,000 non-profit and government referral agencies that assist with long-term, family-strengthening support, including: food, housing, job-training, child-care, and high school graduation courses.

The demand for our services continues to increase due to Richmond’s inordinately high rates of poverty, out of wedlock pregnancy, and abortions in Richmond. Together so far this year we have provided $625,000 in needed services—at no cost to our clients or community. As we impact the lives of individuals, we are also making a significant financial impact in our community.

Please prayerfully consider a year-end or monthly investment in the PRC that will help us:

Ensure our clients receive the knowledge of the word of God and may enjoy abundant living through Christ;

Reduce the rate and costly consequences of teen pregnancy in Richmond, by helping to bring our schools and community forums an evidence-based healthy relationship curriculum;

Provide increased safe and sound medical services for teens and young mothers, by increasing our ultrasound and counseling services; and

Reduce the occurrence and expense of child abuse and neglect through the expansion of our parenting education programs, to include a special focus on nurturing prenatal and infant care.

When you give, please know that it is an investment that will not only help all of us avoid the costly consequences of not talking to our teens about sex; most importantly, it will support and produce more young believers whose lives shall glorify our Lord.

Blessings,

Kim Warburton, LAS

Executive Director
